Italian police have reported a disturbing incident in which hooded attackers stabbed a Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) supporter before the French club's Champions League match against AC Milan. The unidentified French man sustained "serious injuries from two stab wounds in the leg" in Milan on Monday night and was promptly transported to a hospital, according to police statements.
While the victim's identity remains undisclosed, Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera identified him as a 34-year-old man, asserting that his life is not at risk.
Eyewitnesses informed law enforcement that the altercation occurred between approximately 50 Milan fans and French supporters in the Navigli area of the northern Italian city. Social media videos shared by Italian news outlets depicted a group of men along a canal, known for its cafes, bars, and nightlife. As the footage shows flares being set off, the men suddenly retreat from another group, some of whom are wearing hoods and brandishing objects resembling batons.
This incident unfolds less than two months after a Newcastle United supporter was also stabbed in the same area of Milan before a Champions League match against the Italian club.
On Tuesday, Milan, a seven-time European champion, is hosting PSG, which currently leads Group F by two points. PSG emerged as favorites after defeating Milan 3-0 at the Parc des Princes two weeks ago.
The match at the San Siro is anticipated to be intense, with the return of Italy's goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who left Milan for PSG as a free agent in the summer of 2021.
This Champions League clash could significantly influence the knockout stage prospects of both teams, as only four points separate the four teams in the group. Milan finds itself at the bottom of the group with just two points after failing to score a goal in their first three matches.
