ABUJA, Nigeria - A coalition meeting featuring former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and other politicians faced disruption as Jigawa delegates protested within the hall on Sunday.
The gathering took place at the Abuja Continental Hotel and was organized by the National Political Consultative Group.
Reports gathered stated that tensions escalated when Babachir Lawal, a former secretary to the government of the federation, appointed a delegate to represent Jigawa State.
This decision upset the Jigawa delegates, who forcefully protested and prevented the appointed speaker from addressing the audience.
Security personnel were called in to restore order, leading to Mustapha Lamido, the son of a former Jigawa governor, speaking on behalf of the delegates.
This meeting is part of ongoing efforts by opposition factions to unite against President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 presidential election.
Attendees included Atiku Abubakar, head of the People’s Democratic Party; Peter Obi from the Labour Party; former Rivers governor and transportation minister, Rotimi Amaechi, along with other opposition leaders.
