Report has it that a yet-to-be-identified armed robber met his demise during the intense exchange of gunfire with the Nigeria police. The Abbey Hostel in Ode Remo, housing students from the Gateway ICT Polytechnic Saapade in Ogun state, became the battleground for a fierce gunfight between state police operatives and suspected robbers on Thursday morning.
The turmoil commenced around 1:30 am on Thursday when four alleged robbers infiltrated the area, launching a raid on the hostel. Students fell victim to the assailants who forcibly took away their mobile phones and electronic devices.
An anonymous source from the area revealed that amidst the ongoing robbery, a resident discreetly alerted the police about the criminal activities unfolding in the vicinity.
As the anti-crime patrol team approached, the suspected robbers, spotting law enforcement, opened fire on the officers dispatched to rescue the students. In the ensuing gun duel, one of the robbers was fatally shot.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident in a WhatsApp chat with our correspondent, stating that the remaining suspects fled with gunshot wounds. Odutola disclosed that the police recovered a bag containing five iPhones, one Techno phone, a wristwatch, an iPod, and a power bank from the scene.
She further added, "Efforts are currently ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects."
