During an operation in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Police Command seized 300 packets of cannabis sativa, also referred to as Indian hemp.
At a press conference in Port Harcourt on Friday, Mr. Nwonyi Emeka, the Commissioner of Police for the Rivers region, revealed this information to reporters.
He claimed that after getting reliable information from an informant, police officers assigned to the command's C4i Intelligent Unit stopped a bus carrying the prohibited item and seized everything.
“The 300 parcels of Indian hemp were intercepted on Oct. 28 after operatives, working with credible information, trailed a white Volkswagen bus with registration number MUS 910 YA.
“Upon sighting the approaching police operatives, the driver took to his heels but was arrested after a hot chase.
“Shortly after the suspect was apprehended, operatives searched the vehicle and recovered 300 parcels whose content was suspected to be Indian hemp,” he said.
According to Emeka, the suspect is undergoing questioning in order to find out where the illicit goods came from and where they went.
However, in a related development, the head of police announced that officers dismantled a notorious gang of armed robbers that was behind numerous robberies throughout the state after acting on intelligence.
The Police disclosed their intentions to restore peace and orderliness to the vicinity.
