The Nigeria Police Council on Tuesday confirmed Kayode Egbetokun as the substantive Inspector General of Police (IGP).
The confirmation was announced by Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State after the Police Council meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Mohammed also said that President Bola Tinubu, who chaired the meeting, intervened in the political and security situation unfolding in Rivers State with the planned impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Tinubu had on Monday, June 19, 2023, appointed Egbetokun as acting IGP. He replaced Usman Baba, who was appointed as IGP by former President Muhammadu Buhari on April 6, 2021.
Egbetokun, born on September 4, 1964, from the Egbado South Local Government Area of Ogun State, enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet ASP (Course 16) on March 3, 1990. He is expected to clock 35 years in service by September 2024, according to police rules.
Implications of the Confirmation
The confirmation of Egbetokun as substantive IGP is a significant development in the Nigerian Police Force.
It comes at a time when the country is facing a number of security challenges, including terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry.
Egbetokun's experience and expertise in policing are expected to be invaluable in addressing these challenges. He has a proven track record of success in various police formations across the country.
