The Commissioner of Police for Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has mandated the detention of three police inspectors accused of engaging in corrupt practices within the state.
The officers allegedly extorted money from a civilian after unlawfully searching his mobile phone during a routine patrol in Anambra.
A statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, indicated that after personally interrogating the officers, Orutugu condemned their actions, labeling them a serious breach of the ethics upheld by the Nigeria Police Force.
“The Commissioner expressed disapproval of the poor conduct exhibited by the officers in the line of duty. Their behavior, which involved accosting an unsuspecting citizen, unlawfully searching his phone, and extorting money, is both unprofessional and intolerable,” Ikenga remarked.
Furthermore, he announced that internal disciplinary measures have been initiated against the officers, adhering to the Force’s internal code of conduct.
The Police Commissioner reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to maintaining discipline, transparency, accountability, and public trust, emphasizing that any misuse of authority or corrupt activities will not be accepted.
“Such misconduct undermines the professional ethos of the Police and jeopardizes ongoing efforts to reinforce public confidence. It contributes to a broader trust gap between citizens and law enforcement,” the statement conveyed.
The Command pledged to the public its commitment to eradicating corrupt practices and preserving the integrity of the Force.
