EDO STATE, Nigeria —  Edo Police Command has called on the state government officials and other organisations to collaborate with the police in the distribution of palliatives to forestall any stampede that could lead to death and injuries to citizens of the state.

This information was contained in a statement by the command’s spokesman, Moses Yamu.

He said the advice became pertinent to ensure that palliatives were distributed in an organised manner free of chaos.

The statement reads, “Following recent cases of stampedes leading to avoidable deaths in some parts of the country, the Edo State Police Command has proactively called on government officials, community leaders, religious bodies, and non-governmental organisations to collaborate with the state command for a comprehensive and organised way of going about the distribution of any palliatives.

“The Commissioner of Police, Ozigi Umoru, therefore warns groups and organisers of similar events to ensure they involve the Police or other security agencies to avoid such occurrences in the state.

“The Command remains committed to always ensuring the safety of lives and property.

Recall that at least 35 children were killed in Oyo State last Wednesday. Also, on Saturday, 22 people died in Anambra State, while 10 died in Abuja, where more than 1,000 people had gathered at a church to receive clothes and food palliatives.
