The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, has revealed that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has arrested over 700 individuals for violating electoral laws during the 2023 general elections. He disclosed this during a meeting with Commissioners of Police from the 36 states of the federation and the FCT, along with other senior officers on Monday.
According to the IGP, the number of those arrested currently stands at 781. He also gave a breakdown of the arrest, stating that 185 cases of electoral infractions were recorded during the presidential election with 203 arrests made. For the Governorship and State Assembly elections, the police chief said that 304 electoral breaches were recorded and 578 offenders were arrested.
Speaking further, the IGP noted that the meeting with the Commissioners and other leaders within the force had become crucial in light of the threats to national security by some political actors who are trying to undermine the peace of the country after the elections. He condemned the action of these political actors who engage in ethnic profiling to advance their interests and called on Nigerians to strive towards unity.
