The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has finally produced former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele before an Abuja High Court.
Justice Olukayode Adeniyi had on November 2 ordered the EFCC to either release Emefiele unconditionally or bring him to court to be granted bail.
However, the agency initially failed to comply with the order, citing incomplete paperwork.
Emefiele's lawyer, Mr Mathew Burkaa, SAN, had complained to the court that EFCC flouted both orders.
Justice Adeniyi expressed his dissatisfaction with the response and asked the EFCC lawyer to explain why the agency had disobeyed the court order.
Mr Abdullah, representing the EFCC, said the agency had misunderstood the order and thought it was simply an option to bring Emefiele to court for bail.
He assured the court that EFCC has utmost respect for the judiciary and would not intentionally flout orders.
In compliance with the order, the EFCC brought Emefiele to court on Wednesday.
See Godwin Emefiele in court:
Emefiele had filed an ex-parte motion seeking an order to compel the EFCC to release him from custody or grant him bail.
He also sought N5 million in damages for the violation of his fundamental rights.
Emefiele was suspended from office as CBN governor on June 9 and was later arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS).
He faces a two-count charge of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition before the Federal High Court in Lagos, as well as a 20-count corruption charge before an Abuja High Court.
However, proceedings in both cases have been put on hold while the defendants negotiate a plea bargain deal with the Federal Government.
