The organisers of the Paris Olympics announced on Friday that they were facing difficulties due to a widespread computer systems outage, just a week before the opening ceremony of the Games.
The issue coincided with a major global outage that affected computer systems around the world, leading to flight cancellations in the US, disruptions in television broadcasts in the UK, and problems with telecommunications in Australia.
The Paris 2024 committee acknowledged the impact of the technical issues related to Microsoft software on their IT operations and stated that they were working to mitigate the effects and had implemented contingency plans to ensure continuity of operations.
According to a source within the Paris Olympic Games organising committee, the problem is affecting the accreditation system, causing some individuals to be unable to collect their badges before the upcoming ceremony.
Additionally, it may also disrupt the travel plans of athletes whose flights have been cancelled, following the recent opening of the Olympic Village to its first guests.
The disruption caused by the outage has also been felt in various other sectors, including the London Stock Exchange, airports in Spain, the Netherlands, and Hong Kong, as well as production at Tesla's plant near Berlin.
Microsoft has stated that they are taking measures to address the service issues, although it remains unclear whether these actions are directly related to the global outages.
