A video of a police officer assaulting a young man in Port Harcourt which had gone viral, sparked outrage and renewed concern about police brutality in Nigeria. In the video, the officer was seen using a cane to flog the man, who asked why he was being beaten. The officer then slapped the man and ordered him to walk to his car, while a second officer rough handled the man's female companion.
In response, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has condemned the incident and stated that it is unethical for police officers to use corporal punishment. Adejobi has ordered the Rivers State Command to investigate and identify the officers involved in the incident.
