South African Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius has made another attempt to secure early release from prison, a decade after he killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
The champion's new bid for parole comes after serving more than half of his 13-year prison sentence for the murder of his girlfriend.
Pistorius murdered Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013. He claimed that he mistook her for an intruder and fired four shots through the bathroom door, killing her.
Pistorius' new bid for parole
Pistorius was initially sentenced to six years in prison. However, the Supreme Court of Appeal overturned his conviction in 2015 and sentenced him to 13 years and five months in prison.
He has been eligible for parole since 2021. However, his previous parole applications have been rejected.
It is unclear how quickly the parole board will decide, but it could be fast. In the event Pistorius is granted parole, a date will be set for his release.
Among other factors, the parole board will consider Pistorius's conviction, his conduct while in prison, and the risk he poses to the public.
The parole board would set a specific date for Pistorius' release if he prevails in his case.
Oscar Pistorius' athletic career
At the age of just under a year, both of Pistorius' legs below the knees were amputated. With the help of his prostheses, he went on to become a famous athlete, widely dubbed the "blade runner."
At the Paralympics, he swept the gold medals. While at the 2012 London Olympics, he went up against able-bodied competitors as well.
