The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has disputed a report that he scammed a woman in the United States of $180,000.
A well-known blogger stated on X that the respected monarch received the hefty sum from a woman named Fagbule, who was born in Osun, in an alleged marriage hoax.
The voice note-laced story also claimed that the victim, an Ile-Ife indigene, was well-known to the monarch and had tried to arrange for free medical treatment for women and children in her community before being misled.
Moses Olafare, Ogunwusi's spokesperson, responded angrily to the charges on Facebook, calling them "fake, untrue, and unfounded."
The monarch fiercely denied having a personal relationship with Fagbule, claiming that she was misled by sophisticated scam artistes acting as him.
Going one step further, Ogunwusi cautioned women not to fall victim to scammers because of their strong desire to marry.
A portion of the statement read: “That the news as posted by a Twitter (now X) handle called “99% OPPRESSED” is fake, untrue, and absolutely an unfounded allegation only adopted as a nugatory character assassination tactics aimed at achieving a cheap popularity with a view to drawing huge followers/traffic for avaricious monetization from Twitter (X).”
