In a tragic incident in conflict-ridden eastern DR Congo, one person lost his life, and 11 others sustained injuries when a soldier inadvertently fired a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) into a stadium in Goma. The announcement was made by the military on Thursday.
According to army spokesman Guillaume Ndjike, the Congolese soldier had unintentionally triggered the RPG in the afternoon, which landed in Goma's Unity stadium. The explosion resulted in injuries to twelve people, with one of them succumbing to their wounds later.
Ndjike clarified that the soldier had discharged the RPG while inside a vehicle that encountered a bump in the road near the stadium.
Witnesses, including Prince Mumbere, a Goma resident near the scene, reported seeing wounded football players leaving the venue in the aftermath of the incident. Unverified images circulating on social media depicted injured footballers and a young man covered in blood as they were evacuated from the stadium, either on foot or via motorbikes.
Goma's Unity Stadium is situated approximately 30 kilometres (18 miles) from the frontlines that separate Congolese troops from M23 rebels. The M23 rebels have gained control of significant parts of North Kivu province since initiating a campaign in late 2021.
