LAGOS, Nigeria - The Lagos State Police Command has reported one fatality from the explosion that took place on Thursday, April 3, 2025, in the Idi-Araba area of Mushin, Lagos State. Additionally, three individuals suffered injuries and were transported to a medical facility.
The tragic event occurred when a scrap metal dealer attempted to cut a metal object, which unbeknownst to him was a military-grade grenade, leading to an explosion that resulted in his demise.
Police experts from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit of the Lagos State Command responded to the site.
Fragments of the exploded grenade and two live grenades were removed from the location to the Base Headquarters of the Police EOD-CBRN in Lagos for safety reasons.
The Commissioner of Police for Lagos State, Moshood Olohundare Jimoh, urged residents to remain calm and peaceful, continuing their daily activities without fear or anxiety.
The Commissioner further assured all Lagos residents of their safety, stating that the explosion site and surrounding areas have been secured and deemed safe by the EOD-CBRN Unit.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, remarked: “The EOD-CBRN Unit is collaborating with the Counter Improvised Explosive Device (CIED) Squadron of the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army to trace the source of the explosive device and to take all necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“Members of the public are strongly advised to exercise caution, particularly those engaged in scavenging or scrap metal trading, and to report any suspicious items to the nearest police station for proper handling.”
