The Ondo state lawmakers from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the House of Representatives, who are loyal to the late Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, have called on President Tinubu to intervene in the alleged disrespect shown by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa towards their late principal.
The emergence of Aiyedatiwa as governor of Ondo State followed the demise of Akeredolu on December 27, 2023.
In an open letter signed by six lawmakers including Adesida Abiodun, Timehin Adelegbe, Festus Ayodele, Ojogo Kimikanboh, Odimayo John, and Adegboyega Adefarati, the lawmakers warned of dire consequences for the APC if Aiyedatiwa does not retrace his steps.
The leader of the caucus, Adesida, made the call while speaking to journalists in Abuja.
Adesida called on President Tinubu to wade into the matter and save the face of the ruling party, particularly with the governorship election due in November.
Adesida accused Gov Aiyedatiwa of taking official decisions that showed little or no respect for the legacies left behind by the late Akeredolu. He specifically highlighted the appointment of Olajide Adelami, a known political adversary of the late governor, as a move that has caused significant discord among party members.
The lawmakers urged Tinubu to prevent Ondo State from falling into the hands of the opposition due to internal conflicts, emphasizing the need for decisive and unifying leadership.
In response to these allegations, the lawmaker representing Ondo East/Ondo West Federal Constituency, Mr Abiola Makinde, criticized his colleagues, describing their loyalty to late Akeredolu as fake and accusing them of intending to create a crisis in the party.
When contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Ebenezer Adeniyan, declined comment on the matter.
Meanwhile, the deputy governor, Olayide Adelami, refuted the allegation that he was an enemy of the late Governor Akeredolu. In a statement, Adelami described the allegation as malicious and falsehood, asserting his long-standing support for the late governor.
