OGUN, Nigeria (NAN) - The Ogun State Government has announced the closure of two companies due to industrial accidents that led to fatalities.
The Chairman of the State Task Force on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement shared this information in a statement on Thursday in Abeokuta.
He identified the firms as Quantum Steel Industry located in Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government Area, and Xinfeng Plastics Limited found along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
Akintunde explained that Quantum Steels was shut down following an industrial explosion that resulted in deaths, with some victims still receiving medical attention, while Xinfeng Plastics was closed after a machine operator died from electrocution.
He mentioned that the government's decision to seal the companies was made to examine the underlying factors of the incidents and develop solutions to prevent similar occurrences.
He stated, “We are committed to conducting thorough and credible investigations, even engaging external safety experts to determine the root cause of these events in the public interest and for safety reasons.
It is particularly disheartening that despite the state government's ongoing efforts to visit these companies and educate them on adhering to safety protocols, such accidents still happened in their production environments, which necessitated their closure.”
Akintunde confirmed that both firms would remain closed until investigations are finalized and new safety measures are implemented. He also cautioned other companies in the state to prioritize the safety of their workers, particularly those in production roles.
