OGUN, Nigeria - The Ogun State Government has launched a new initiative focused on decreasing maternal and newborn mortality rates within the state, as well as addressing significant gaps in maternal healthcare through evidence-based strategies.
The implementation of the strategic roadmap was introduced to the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, by the health sector leadership, dubbed the “Maternal and Newborn Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiative (MAMII).” This initiative, conceptualized from the Sector-wide Approach (SWAp) led by the Office of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammadu Ali Pate, seeks to target critical issues in maternal healthcare through evidence-driven interventions, community involvement, and enhanced health systems.
Ogun State's Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, emphasized the government’s steadfast commitment to advancing maternal and newborn survival rates during a five-day co-creation workshop for MAMII implementation design in the state.
Additionally, Dr. Dayo Adeyanju, the Team Lead for MAMII, noted that the adopted approach is grounded in context-specific solutions tailored to the unique challenges faced within the state.
