NGERIA- The former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has retracted his earlier condemnation of the federal government regarding an alleged collapse of the National Grid.
Barely ten days into the New Year, Nigeria's national power grid reportedly faced its first significant collapse of 2025 on Saturday, leading to a widespread blackout across the nation.
In response to the reported grid failure, Peter Obi expressed his concern that such collapses have become a frequent issue in Nigeria's national affairs.
He noted that these ongoing failures have resulted in significant challenges and difficulties for both households and businesses in the country.
However, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) refuted claims of a national grid collapse, stating that what actually happened was a line tripping incident that only impacted Lagos State.
In a new statement posted on his X account on Sunday, Peter Obi indicated that he had been informed that the grid had not collapsed.
He thanked the TCN for their swift clarification on the situation.
The former governor of Anambra State wrote: “Following my previous message concerning the alleged collapse of the National Grid, which was based on reports from credible media sources,
I have now learned that there was no such collapse. Instead, the incident involved the tripping of the Osogbo-Ihovbor and Benin-Omotosho lines, which affected the Lagos area. I appreciate the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) for their prompt clarification on this issue.
I sincerely hope we will focus on improving our infrastructure in the power sector and remain dedicated to enhancing power generation to meet the increasing demands of over 200 million Nigerians.”
