Nobel Chemistry Winner Failed First Chemistry Exam In College

POSTED ON October 4, 2023 •   World      BY Segun Adewole •   VIEWS 209
Moungi Bawendi, a 62-year-old professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), has been honored with the Nobel Chemistry Prize for his groundbreaking contributions to the development of "quantum dots." These minuscule nanoparticles have found widespread applications in modern technology, from enhancing next-generation TV screens to aiding in the detection and visualization of tumors within the human body. In a striking twist of fate, Bawendi's journey into the world of chemistry faced a daunting challenge during his undergraduate years. He candidly recalls flunking his very first chemistry exam, an experience that he describes as nearly "destroying" him emotionally. Bawendi, who hails from Tunisian and French heritage, had excelled in science throughout high school, often effortlessly mastering the subject matter. However, when he matriculated at Harvard University in the late 1970s as an undergraduate, he confronted a profound academic awakening. This setback marked a pivotal turning point in Bawendi's academic journey. Instead of succumbing to defeat, he embraced the challenge head-on, immersing himself in the world of chemistry with renewed determination and perseverance. "I was used to not having to study for exams," he told reporters Wednesday, adding that he was intimidated both by the enormous size of the hall and the stern presence of a proctor. "I looked at the first question and I couldn't figure it out, and the second question I couldn't figure it out," he remembered. In the end, he scored 20 out of a 100, the lowest grade in his entire class. "And I thought, 'Oh my god, this is the end of me, what am I doing here?'" Though Bawendi loved chemistry, he realized he hadn't learned the art of preparing for exams, something he quickly set about rectifying. "I figured out how to study, which I didn't know how to do before" he said, and after that "it was 100s on every exam, pretty much." His message for young people is simple: "Persevere," and don't let setbacks "destroy you." "It could easily have destroyed me, my first experience with an F, the lowest grade in my class by far," he added. Overcoming his early struggles, Bawendi's career has since been distinguished by groundbreaking work in the field of chemistry. His contributions to quantum dots have revolutionized multiple industries, from entertainment to healthcare. Bawendi's story serves as a reminder that setbacks and initial failures need not define one's journey. In his case, they fueled his determination and resilience, ultimately leading him to one of the highest accolades in the scientific world, the Nobel Chemistry Prize.
