In anticipation of the 2027 elections, the Labour Party (LP) has announced that it will not restrict its presidential ticket or any of its positions to any specific geographical area or individual.
This statement was made in response to claims suggesting that the party had assigned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South-East region.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, made this clarification in a statement released in Abuja on Monday.
He addressed reports circulating that the Labour Party had indeed zoned its presidential ticket to the South-East.
Ifoh emphasized that comments made by the party’s National Chairman, which were misinterpreted, did not imply such zoning for the 2027 elections.
He explained that Abure's statement, shared on Sunday with the title, ‘2027: Labour Party still available for Ndigbo to realise presidency – Abure,’ merely encouraged South-East members to unite and build alliances with other groups to pursue the presidency effectively.
According to Ifoh, Abure's intention was to highlight that the Labour Party serves as a strong platform for Igbo aspirations.
“Labour Party is a national entity with substantial support throughout the country, so the concept of zoning is irrelevant. In the 2023 general elections, the party secured seats in both northern and southern regions, and we are striving to excel beyond that in upcoming elections. Candidates for all positions must emerge through rigorous and democratic processes, as our constitution does not allow zoning,” he stated.
Ifoh expressed regret over the media's misinterpretation of the party's intentions, acknowledging the public's deep concerns regarding the inaccurate portrayal.
“This reflects the trust and affection Nigerians have for the Labour Party and their readiness to aid in our mission to transform Nigeria and reinstate a functioning democracy,” he remarked.
He urged Nigerians to maintain their confidence in the party and support it for the significant challenges ahead, asserting, “We will not disappoint you. Together, we shall prevail.”
