The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has invited former President Olusegun Obasanjo to tour the Port Harcourt Refinery (PHR), addressing his recent concerns about its operational effectiveness.
In a statement issued on Thursday, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, responded to Obasanjo’s remarks during a Channels Television interview, where the former president expressed doubts about the refinery’s performance.
“We invite our esteemed former president to join us in ensuring energy security for our nation and improving the lives of Nigerians. His wisdom and experience are invaluable, and we would welcome his guidance,” Soneye stated.
The invitation includes an opportunity for Obasanjo to witness the comprehensive overhaul of the refinery, which NNPCL asserts is not just a Turnaround Maintenance but a full-scale transformation meeting global standards.
Soneye highlighted NNPCL’s broader efforts, including rehabilitating the Warri and Kaduna refineries, as part of its evolution into an integrated energy company. He emphasised the company’s shift from a loss-making government corporation to a profit-oriented private entity, reinforcing its commitment to Nigeria’s energy security.
Obasanjo’s comments also touched on previous challenges in privatising the refineries. He recounted how Aliko Dangote’s $750 million proposal for a public-private partnership was declined, a decision he criticised. Obasanjo also noted resistance to external management from companies like Shell, citing issues like refinery size, maintenance, and corruption.
Addressing reports that NNPCL had stopped supplying crude oil to Dangote Refinery, Soneye categorically dismissed them as false.
NNPCL extended its gratitude to Obasanjo for his contributions to Nigeria’s development and expressed a desire to collaborate in building a brighter future.
