Nnamdi Kanu was released to undergo a medical examination.
The Department of State Services (DSS) released the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on Friday.
Nnamdi Kanu's lead counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, said the IPOB leader met with his physician at an unnamed hospital in Abuja. Ejiofor also said that he witnessed the consultation.
"The medical examination was seamless and productive," Ejiofor said in a statement. "He (Kanu) will be progressing to the next stage soon."
Kanu has been in DSS custody since June 2021, when he was arrested and repatriated from Kenya. He has repeatedly asked for an independent medical examination, and his lawyers have said that he is suffering from several health conditions.
The DSS has not commented on the release of Kanu for medical examination.
What you should know
Nnamdi Kanu is the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a group that seeks independence of the southeastern region from Nigeria.
He was arrested in 2015 and charged with treason, but he jumped bail and fled the country. He was re-arrested in Kenya in June 2021 and extradited to Nigeria.
Kanu has been held in DSS custody since his arrest. His lawyers have said that he is suffering from several health conditions, including a heart condition, a kidney ailment, and a mental health condition.
In October 2021, a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the DSS to allow Kanu access to his physicians. The DSS initially refused to comply with the order, but it eventually relented and allowed Kanu to meet with his doctors.
