Nigeria Electric workers have joined the indefinite strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), leading to a nationwide blackout.
The workers, under the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), withdrew their services on Monday, November 14, 2023, in compliance with the NLC's directive.
The strike is in protest of the assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero on November 1, 2023, in Imo State.
The unions are also demanding that the government address their long-standing grievances.
This includes releasing the N1.3 trillion revitalization fund for public universities.
The union is also asking for the implementation of the 2009 agreement between ASUU and the federal government.
The nationwide blackout has caused widespread disruption to businesses and social activities. The Federal Capital Territory and its environs are among the areas that have been affected.
The government has appealed to the unions to suspend the strike and engage in dialogue. However, the unions have vowed to continue the strike until their demands are met.
RocketParrot reported that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU joined the labour union strike.
The NCL haven vowed to carry out a nationwide strike over the assault on its president has vowed to see the strike through.
It is unclear how long the strike will last, but it is likely to have a significant impact on the Nigerian economy and society.
