As of February 2025, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) had allocated 117.3 million National Identification Numbers (NINs) to Nigerians.
Among the 117.3 million NINs issued, Lagos and Kano emerged as the states with the largest number of enrollees, being the most populous regions in the country. By the conclusion of the third quarter of 2024, NIMC had provided 110 million NINs.
This indicates that an additional seven million Nigerians have been added to the NIN database in just five months, despite enrollment challenges.
A deeper dive into the data revealed that regarding the gender breakdown of enrollees, the NIMC recorded 66.2 million males, making up 56.5 percent, while 51.07 million, or 43.5 percent, were females.
The most recent statistics indicate that Lagos remains the leader with the highest enrolments nationwide, totaling 12.6 million. Following Lagos is Kano State with 10.2 million registered NINs, and Kaduna ranks third with 6.9 million. Together, these three states account for 22.8 million, or 19.4 percent, of the overall total.
The figures from NIMC also indicated that these two states have consistently led in NIN enrollment since the programme began. Other states that ranked in the top 10 for enrolment numbers include Ogun with 4.9 million, Oyo with 4.5 million, Katsina with four million, FCT with 3.7 million, Rivers with 3.5 million, Delta with 3.1 million, and Bauchi with three million.
NIMC's data also identified the 10 states with the fewest NIN enrollees, which are Imo (two million), Kwara (two million), Enugu (1.9 million), Kogi (1.9 million), Yobe (1.8 million), Taraba (1.7 million), and Cross River (1.3 million). Additionally, Ekiti had 1.1 million, Ebonyi had 990,775, and Bayelsa had 758,111 enrollees.
Previously, the NIMC advised Nigerians to change their NIN details exclusively through its official self-service portal to safeguard data security and integrity. The commission emphasized that NIN modifications should only occur at SelfserviceModification.nimc.gov.ng, cautioning against the use of unauthorized websites.
“Do not try to alter your NIN data on any unauthorized sites, as this could compromise your personal information and expose you to identity theft,” warned NIMC. The agency assured Nigerians that its self-service portal is safe and dependable, offering users the ability to update their information from any location.
Stressing the advantages of the new platform, NIMC asserted that the site ensures data integrity while enabling Nigerians to modify their details without the need to visit an enrollment center. “By utilizing the official NIMC self-service portal, you can be confident that your data is secured and protected. You’ll also benefit from the ease of updating your information from any location and at any time,” stated the commission.
