Nigeria’s U-18 women’s handball team kicked off their IHF Trophy Zonal Phase on Sunday with an impressive 53-21 victory over Togo in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The team exhibited thorough control, especially from the wings, establishing a 21-8 advantage by halftime.
Nigeria sustained their dominance in the second half, making it hard for Togo to mount a response, ultimately concluding the match with a significant 53-21 result.
Coaches John Uzor and Bukola Duru encouraged the team to play aggressively, employing rapid ball movement and quick breaks to great effect.
Interestingly, despite Nigeria's commanding performance, none of their players received the Most Valuable Player award, which was given to a player from Togo.
Coach Uzor expressed no disappointment, stating that the comprehensive win was more fulfilling than individual honors.
“I’m delighted with the victory. The girls adhered to our strategy exceptionally, which enabled them to score numerous goals. Recognition is not my priority; the outcome is what truly counts,” Uzor remarked.
Nigeria’s next match is against Burkina Faso on Monday at 9 a.m., while the U-20 team will compete against Togo at 3 p.m.
