Nigerian artist and Instrumentalist, Seun Kuti has spoken out against calls to legalize firearms in the country.
According to the Afrobeat musician, Nigeria is not yet ready for individuals to use guns.
He claimed that such a rule would result in the rich killing the poor at will.
Speaking in a recent Instagram live session with fans, Kuti said: “I don’t believe our society is ripe for us to say we want to put guns in anybody’s hands. First of all, it just means that rich children would be killing poor children all over the place. That’s what would happen.
“All you poor children, they will just be shooting you. Any little franca, they will just pull out guns. Whatever arms you can buy, they can buy bigger ones.
“The politicians are talking about arms legalization because they want to make money from the trade not because they care about your protection. Nigerians don’t need guns to be protected. If the politicians are serious about protecting Nigerians, they can employ enough personnel to secure the country.”
Recall that a security expert and President of the Alumni Association of the National Institute of Security Studies, Mike Ejiofor, said legalizing the carrying of firearms and weapons for Nigerians will not cause anarchy in the country.
Ejiofor stated this in an interview with Arise Television, where he opined that the security situation in the country was not up to par and that the government should encourage the citizens to defend themselves.
