ABUJA, Nigeria - In a notable achievement for the aviation sector, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has officially signed a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) with Canadian officials on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Keyamo clarified that the agreement is not a comprehensive Bilateral arrangement but rather a code-share agreement, which permits two or more airlines to market and sell seats on flights operated by another airline, enabling passengers to fly under a different airline's code.
He mentioned that Nigeria will appoint airline operators to bolster this agreement.
The Minister expressed gratitude to the Canadian authorities, noting that his Canadian counterpart had already signed part of the Bilateral agreement. To reduce costs, he is finalizing the agreement in Nigeria.
He emphasized that this agreement will significantly enhance the relationship between Canada and Nigeria.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, acknowledged the Minister's proactive approach and relentless commitment to advancing Nigeria's aviation sector.
During a welcome address to the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, pointed out that Nigeria holds the highest economic partnership with Canada in Africa, highlighting that the Bilateral Air Services Agreement will yield benefits for both nations.
In his remarks, the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Pasquale Salvaggio, expressed appreciation to the Nigerian government.
He expressed his pleasure in witnessing the BASA signing and indicated the Canadian government's willingness to collaborate with Nigeria in enhancing Bilateral agreements.
