The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has been unbundled by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) through the establishment of the Nigerian Independent System Operator of Nigeria Limited (NISO).
NERC announced this in a directive dated April 30, 2023, and endorsed by NERC chairman, Sanusi Garba, and vice chairman, Musiliu Oseni.
NERC also instructed the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) to register the Independent System Operator as a separate entity from the Transmission Company of Nigeria with the Corporate Affairs Commission within 30 days.
The Nigerian Independent System Operator Limited will oversee the management of the national grid and other system operations related market contracts and transactions.
TCN, as the successor company of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), was granted two licenses by NERC as a Transmission Service Provider and Independent System Operator.
The directive officially separates TCN into Transmission Service Provider (TSP) and Independent System Operator, as the Electricity Act 2023 outlines.
