The National Data Protection Commission (NDPC) on Monday reiterated its dedication to enhancing data privacy practices within Nigeria’s public and private sectors.
During a regional capacity-building workshop in Katsina for ICT personnel from the north-western states, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, stated that the commission is intensifying the enforcement of data protection regulations in accordance with national laws.
Olatunji, who was represented by the Head of the Commission’s Enforcement Unit, Mr. Princewill Nnaka, mentioned that the NDPC is committed to raising awareness about data rights, improving staff training, and collaborating with development agencies to strengthen capacity.
He emphasized that more robust data protection measures would help mitigate occurrences of cyberbullying, online financial fraud, and loss of lives due to privacy breaches.
“Data protection is a global issue,” he remarked. “Our objective is to ensure that Nigeria conforms to international standards for the protection of personal data.”
Additionally, Naufal Ahmed, the Director General of the Katsina State Directorate of ICT (KATDICT), highlighted that the training was intended to equip participants with the technical expertise necessary for implementing the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023.
He further noted that the initiative would enable participants to act as Master Trainers and Data Protection Officers (DPOs) in their respective organizations.
The three-day program attracted 40 participants, including four officials each from Kaduna, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, and Zamfara States, along with 16 representatives from various ministries, departments, and agencies in Katsina State.
