LAGOS, Nigeria - The Special Operations Unit of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 20-year-old Ghanaian based in the United Kingdom, Parker Osei, for allegedly trafficking drugs at Lagos airport in Ikeja.
Osei was caught with 36 parcels of Loud, a potent cannabis strain, weighing 19.40kg, which he had packed in a large travel bag brought to the airport.
The suspect, who claims to be a Computer Science student at East London University, UK, was detained during the inward clearance of passengers from an Ethiopian Airlines flight arriving from Bangkok, Thailand, at the E-arrival hall of Lagos airport.
In his statement, the tech student asserted that he resides with his parents in the UK and had traveled to Bangkok about a week prior to collect the illegal drug shipment for delivery in Nigeria.
In addition to him, the agency also arrested two brothers, John Abugu, 43, and Kenneth Abugu, 31, at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos, with 5 kilograms of cocaine hidden in the walls of their luggage as they tried to board a flight to India.
According to NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Baba Femi, the brothers were apprehended just three days ago at the Lagos airport following careful processing of accurate intelligence.
He stated, “They claimed they were traveling to India for medical treatment, but when NDLEA officers conducted a thorough search of their luggage, whitish powdery substances, later confirmed as cocaine, were found concealed in the walls of their bags.”
