ABUJA, Nigeria (NAN) - The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reported a total of 69 currency declarations following the introduction of its Electronic Currency Declaration Form (e-CDF) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
The spokesperson for the service, Abdullahi Maiwada, disclosed this information in a statement released on Friday in Abuja.
"During the trial phase, the e-CDF system documented 69 currency declaration transactions. Outbound declarations were responsible for 51 transactions amounting to a total declared value of $1,200,281.22, while inbound declarations totaled 18 with a declared value of $177,786.88," he stated.
Maiwada characterized this deployment as a part of NCS’s continuous digital transformation and modernization efforts focused on improving border controls and increasing transparency in financial reporting.
The NCS had announced the implementation of e-CDF as a component of its measures against money laundering for travelers carrying cash in and out of Nigeria.
According to the spokesperson, the pilot scheme was initiated on April 9 without any issues, demonstrating the effectiveness of the system.
"It showcased the system’s capability in digitally recording both inbound and outbound currency declarations, providing a more secure, efficient, and accountable process for cross-border travelers," he noted.
Maiwada explained that the e-CDF platform was designed to conform to international standards in anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-financing of terrorism (CFT) protocols.
He emphasized that the form provides real-time data that aids intelligence gathering and cooperation among various agencies.
The NCS is committed to utilizing technology to enhance its operations and safeguard Nigeria’s borders.
"Under the leadership of the Comptroller-General, Adewale Adeniyi, the NCS is devoted to harnessing technology to boost compliance, facilitate legitimate travel and trade, and ensure the integrity of Nigeria’s borders.
Following the successful pilot phase, plans are in place to extend the e-CDF system's deployment to other international airports and border posts throughout the nation," he added.
