Nato Says Fragments Of Russian-Styled Drones Found In Romania

For the third time, fragments of Russian-style drones have been discovered on Romanian territory, according to a statement from NATO spokesperson Dylan White. The finding raised concerns about Russia's actions near the Ukrainian port infrastructure adjacent to Romania. While addressing the issue, White clarified that NATO has no information suggesting any intentional attack by Russia against Allied territory. Romania, as a NATO member, benefits from the organization's mutual defense agreement. The drone fragments were uncovered near the eastern village of Plauru, situated close to the Ukrainian border, on Saturday. Romania formally protested to the Russian government following this discovery, with drone debris having been found in the same Plauru region earlier in the week, just a short distance from the Saturday finding. The ongoing situation prompted Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to discuss the matter during a recent telephone conversation. Stoltenberg emphasized that there was no indication of intent to target NATO, but he expressed concern over the destabilizing effect of these strikes. He also welcomed the decision by the United States to deploy additional F-16 fighter jets for NATO air policing. Since the commencement of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, NATO has been actively working to prevent the conflict from spilling over into its member countries. Romania, in response to repeated Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports and infrastructure along the Danube, has escalated surveillance and security measures in its airspace. The recurring discovery of drone fragments in close proximity to the Ukrainian border highlights the ongoing regional tensions and the need for vigilance in maintaining security and stability.
