NASARAWA, Nigeria - The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, in partnership with the First Lady’s Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), has provided training and financial empowerment to women farmers in Nasarawa State amounting to N26 million.
The Wife of the Nasarawa State Governor, Hajiya Silifat Sule, conducted the symbolic presentation on Wednesday in Lafia, urging the beneficiaries to leverage both the training and funds to strengthen food security.
Sule, represented by Mrs. Tosin Sheila Akabe, the Wife of the Deputy Governor, noted that the women farmer groups were chosen from all 13 local government areas within the state.
She emphasized that Nasarawa State boasts fertile land and a rich agricultural background, highlighting that women and youth are essential for unlocking potential and ensuring a sustainable future for the region.
“It is a privilege to be here today, as we launch this important agricultural support program under the Renewed Hope Initiative.
We have come together to celebrate potential, ignite ambition, and renew our firm belief in the capabilities of youth and women, especially concerning food, nutrition, and security.
This agricultural support program goes beyond merely providing tools and resources; it is about investing in youths and women, empowering them to become leaders in agriculture for sustainable livelihoods,” Sule stated.
She encouraged the beneficiaries to seize growth opportunities despite the challenges ahead and to contribute to a stronger, more prosperous Nasarawa State.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Humanitarian Services, Princess Margaret Elayo, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government and the governor’s wife for the initiative.
Elayo, represented by Permanent Secretary Emmanuel Yonah, mentioned that the empowerment would enhance women’s agro-businesses. Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Tanko Tunga, represented by Assistant Director Chinyere Nwaosuocha, commended the First Lady for the initiative and urged beneficiaries to make wise use of the training and resources they received.
A Resource Person at the training, Prof. Ibrahim Haruna,highlighted the importance of adopting homegrown gardens and maintaining them with organic manure, animal dung, and protective nets against animals.
