Nagelsmann Becomes Germany's New Coach

POSTED ON November 8, 2023 •   Sports      BY Segun Adewole
Julian Nagelsmann, the 36-year-old football prodigy who faced an unexpected exit from Bayern Munich earlier this year, is now poised to steer his native Germany in the upcoming European Championship on home soil in 2024. Nagelsmann had already etched an impressive career, both domestically and in Europe, with successful stints at Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig before his brief tenure at Bayern Munich. He now claims the distinction of being the second-youngest national team coach in German history, and incredibly, the youngest in nearly a century. By Euro 2024, Nagelsmann will be 37 years old, and if he achieves victory, he will become the youngest coach to win the tournament, surpassing Jose Villalonga, who led Spain to victory in 1964 at the age of 44. Known for his tactical flexibility, Nagelsmann has a knack for adjusting formations during matches, a skill honed during his early coaching days as an opposition scout at Augsburg, where he worked under Thomas Tuchel, who would later replace him at Bayern Munich. Nagelsmann's appointment comes six months after his dismissal from Bayern Munich, when the team was performing strongly in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League. His departure was attributed to concerns about a strained dressing room atmosphere and the inability to maximize a squad that was one of the best in Europe. Born in 1987 in the Bavarian village of Landsberg am Lech, Nagelsmann began his career as a defender before knee injuries forced an early retirement at the age of 20. He transitioned into coaching, joining the youth coaching staff under mentor Thomas Tuchel at Augsburg. Under Tuchel's guidance, Nagelsmann honed his analytical skills and developed a profound love for the game. While their connection has been described as "more hype than reality," Nagelsmann credits Tuchel with inspiring his coaching career. Nagelsmann's meteoric rise in coaching saw him take charge of Hoffenheim at just 28, becoming the youngest head coach in Bundesliga history. His achievements there included securing Hoffenheim's first-ever Champions League appearance. A move to RB Leipzig followed, where he led the team to the Champions League semi-finals and a German Cup final. Bayern Munich eventually lured him back to Bavaria for a record fee of 25 million euros. Despite a successful start at Bayern, Nagelsmann's tenure was cut short midway through his second season. His team had lost just three out of 37 games, but a quarter-final exit in the Champions League led to his departure. As Nagelsmann embarks on leading Germany's national team, it remains to be seen whether he can replicate his domestic success on the international stage.
