ABUJA- The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Directorate, confiscated illicit alcoholic items in Abuja's Wuse Market.
Mr Kenneth Azikiwe, FCT Director of the agency, made this statement on Thursday: The manufacture and marketing of alcoholic beverages in sachets and PET bottles remain prohibited.
According to him, multiple sachets of alcohol in small bottles, including 30ml and 100ml packets, were located and confiscated.
The director advised distributors and merchants to stop selling and distributing the banned items and return any remaining stock to NAFDAC.
He said: “We want to appeal to manufacturers to respect the ministerial ban and the agreement signed by the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria in 2018 with NAFDAC.
“The Association of Food, Tobacco, Beverage Employers, and the Federal Competition Consumer Protection Council, were also part of the agreement,”
He said that the agreement, which established a phased withdrawal process, had reached the last stage of securing the removal of banned products from the market.
He further mentioned that enlightenment programs and stakeholder engagements have been held over the years to ensure compliance with the restriction.
He also stated that it is discouraging that some producers and distributors claim ignorance of the restriction, despite widespread public awareness.
