ABUJA, Nigeria (NAN) - The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has called on Nigerians to prioritize their safety by making well-informed choices to safeguard themselves against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
The agency's Director-General, Dr. Temitope Ilori, provided this advice in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, in light of the upcoming Valentine’s Day festivities.
Dr. Ilori pointed out that HIV is still a significant public health issue, despite being preventable. “Participating in risky behaviors such as unprotected sex, having multiple sexual partners, or using substances that cloud judgment raises the risk of HIV transmission.
“With Valentine’s Day around the corner, we urge Nigerians to remember that true love comes with responsibility. Let’s celebrate this season of love wisely by making informed choices that keep ourselves and our partners safe from HIV and other STIs,” he stated.
The NACA Director-General emphasized the importance of knowing one’s HIV status. “It is crucial for individuals to undergo regular HIV testing and take proactive measures to ensure their safety, as this is vital for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Knowing your HIV status is the first step toward protection. Regular testing plays a key role in a healthy lifestyle and allows you to take preventive measures.
“We want Nigerians to enjoy Valentine’s Day while making health-conscious decisions. HIV is preventable; we possess the means to halt its spread. Love responsibly, get tested, and make informed choices.”
