The Abia State Government has announced that it will commence the payment of the new minimum wage of N70,000 in October 2024.
The state Governor, Alex Otti, said this while briefing newsmen during this week’s State Executive Council meeting.
The state Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, said the move became necessary following "the government's disposition towards workers in the state.
“The state government is committed towards the minimum wage and because of this, within the next couple of days, the payment of the minimum wage will commence.
“It is known that there is a national minimum wage and the state will take it from there. However, if the governor wants to deviate from there, so be it.”
However, in his speech, the Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Sunny Onwuma, confirmed the development, saying the state is paying the national minimum wage of N70,000.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, also disclosed that nine new road projects were to be procured across the three senatorial zones of the state.
