N2M Holiday Allowance Small For Senators - Ogun Senator Carpet Nigerians

POSTED ON August 15, 2023 •   Legislation      BY Samuel O . Adeniyi •   VIEWS 56

An Ogun Central Senatorial District candidate, David Aderinokun carpets Nigerians over senators' allowance.

The candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) has said that the N2 million holiday allowance given to Nigerian senators is too small. Aderinokun made this statement in a post on his verified Twitter handle on Tuesday. He said, "The 2m that was given to senators isn't a big deal. It is even too small for a senator. What can a family man do with 2m Naira ($2k)? Why are we making it a big deal? "But they shouldn't have made it public. Making it public is a bit insensitive to the plight of Nigerians." https://twitter.com/daderinokun/status/1691351272899649536?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1691351272899649536%7Ctwgr%5E05d1265a1feeee91c130d6e844c649082ea039e9%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vanguardngr.com%2F2023%2F08%2Fallowance-n2-million-too-small-for-senator-ogun-pdp-senatorial-candidate-aderinokun%2F Recall that the Senate President Godwill Akpabio, during a special plenary session of the screening and confirmation of President Bola Tinubu's ministerial nominees, had informed the senators that the Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA), Magaji Tambuwal, had wired money into their individual bank accounts in order to enjoy their annual holiday. Akpabio had said, "In order to enable all of us to enjoy our holidays, a token has been sent to our various accounts by the Clerk of the National Assembly..." The Senate President's statement met with interruptions from the senators, who were apparently dissatisfied with Akpabio's public disclosure. Akpabio, however, took a pause as he withdrew the statement, while he rephrased the information. "In order to enjoy your holidays, the Senate President has sent prayers to your mailboxes to assist you to go on a safe journey and return," Akpabio said in the alternative to calm down frayed nerves. Aderinokun's statement has sparked a debate on social media, with some people agreeing with him and others disagreeing. Those who agree with Aderinokun argue that the N2 million allowance is not enough for a senator to enjoy a comfortable holiday. They point out that the cost of living in Nigeria is high and that senators have a lot of expenses, such as paying for their children's education and healthcare.
