LAGOS, Nigeria - The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) announced on Friday that it seized over N100 million worth of fuel being smuggled out of Nigeria from a criminal hideout located on the Lagos waterways in Badagry.
The Zonal Coordinator of Operation, Zone A, which includes six states in the South West region, Kehinde Ejibunu, stated that officials intercepted 10,970 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) during the operation.
According to Ejibunu, the commercial value of the fuel is estimated at N110 million, and it was stored in 16 plastic sacks and seven plastic jerrycans hidden in wooden boats.
He remarked, “The smugglers have now devised a new method for smuggling PMS in sacks. Although this method has resurfaced, it is an old technique, and since the operation began, this is the first instance we have encountered this method; all previous seizures were made in jerrycans.
A total of 61 sacks and seven jerrycans were seized by operatives, with each sack holding one hundred and fifty litres (150). This amounts to ten thousand nine hundred and seventy litres (10,970).”
