Musk Contemplates Charging X Users Monthly Fee

During a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Elon Musk, owner of the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), proposed introducing a "small monthly payment" for X users. Musk cited this as the primary method to combat the presence of automated accounts, or "bots," on the platform. The user community of X expressed dismay at the prospect of having to pay for the platform, fearing it could negatively impact the site. Analysts also raised concerns, pointing out that this move might make the platform less appealing to advertisers. Simon Kemp, founder of online advisory firm Kepios, noted that many users might find the process of adding payment details too cumbersome, regardless of the cost. Musk's acquisition of Twitter for $44 billion had initially seen the platform's value drop due to workforce reductions and the return of right-wing conspiracy theorists, which drove advertisers away. Experts believe that implementing a universal paywall could significantly diminish the platform's user base, undermining its "network effect." This effect, characterized by millions of users interacting on the site, is a significant draw for both advertisers and users. James Cooper, director of the Business of Apps agency, stressed that charging all users could destroy the value of the network and discourage contributions to the platform. Meanwhile, Adam Blacker of Apptopia noted that imposing any fee, even a modest one, could drive users to competing platforms like Meta's Threads, launched by Mark Zuckerberg in July. Media commentator Ed Zitron, a vocal critic of Musk, predicted dire consequences, stating that such a move would simultaneously kill the site and its ad revenue. The proposal has sparked a wave of critical messages and memes, leaving the future of X uncertain amidst growing discontent.
