Musicians worldwide have expressed concerns about artificial intelligence posing a threat to creativity, but the CEO of a popular platform disagrees with this view.
BandLab, an online music workstation and distribution platform based in Singapore with over 100 million registered users, recently introduced an AI tool called SongStarter.
This tool generates song ideas based on genre, key, tempo, and lyric prompts. BandLab's founder and CEO, Kuok Meng Ru, believes that AI is not a replacement for real musicians and emphasizes that SongStarter is meant to initiate creativity rather than complete it.
He argues that human creativity is still essential to develop the generated ideas into something meaningful.
While some musicians worry about AI being used to replicate voices and sounds, Kuok, a Radiohead fan from a wealthy family, believes that the trend towards self-production in the music industry is irreversible.
BandLab has had success stories, such as American indie artist David Burke, also known as "d4vd," who achieved over one billion Spotify streams with a track recorded and mastered solely on the app.
Kuok views BandLab as a tool or instrument that artists can use to showcase their talent rather than a replacement for human creativity.
