Morocco Express Concern Over Gaza Crisis

POSTED ON November 2, 2023 •   GLOBAL NEWS      BY Segun Adewole

Morocco has expressed "great concern and deep indignation" regarding the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

The North African nation is deeply troubled by the ongoing crisis and has criticized the international community's inaction and the United Nations Security Council's failure to assume its responsibilities. Morocco's statement unequivocally condemned what it described as "the inability of influential countries to put an end to this catastrophic situation." The country also called out Israel for its "acts of escalation," which it deemed inconsistent with international humanitarian law and universal human values. According to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza, over 9,000 people have lost their lives in the Palestinian territory since the outbreak of violence on October 7. This devastating toll includes the tragic loss of 3,760 children, with the majority of casualties being civilians. Israel, on the other hand, reported at least 1,400 casualties among its civilian population during the same period, with 242 individuals abducted and taken back to Gaza. It's worth noting that Morocco, which normalized diplomatic relations with Israel in 2020, has emerged as a vocal advocate for de-escalation and the establishment of humanitarian corridors. The nation also urged for the release of prisoners and detainees, emphasizing the need for a political solution that can pave the way for the resumption of the two-state solution. Despite their diplomatic relations with Israel, Moroccans have consistently shown their solidarity with the Palestinian people, organizing large-scale demonstrations against the normalization of ties with Israel. The crisis in Gaza remains a poignant issue for the Moroccan people, who continue to stand firmly in support of the Palestinian cause.
