Nice forward Terem Moffi has been called up to join the Super Eagles for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, stepping in for the injured Victor Boniface, as announced by the Nigerian national team on Tuesday.
Bayer Leverkusen's Boniface had to withdraw from the tournament in the Ivory Coast, scheduled from January 13 to February 11, due to a groin injury. In this last-minute roster change, 24-year-old Moffi, who made his international debut in June 2021 and has scored six goals for Nice this season, steps into the squad.
Despite Moffi's impressive performance in the current season, he initially did not secure a spot in coach Jose Peseiro's side. However, with Boniface's unfortunate injury, Moffi now has the opportunity to make his mark in the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations alongside Napoli star Victor Osimhen.
Nigeria, placed in Group A, will contend with hosts Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea. Their opening match is scheduled against Equatorial Guinea on January 14 in Abidjan, and Moffi's inclusion adds an element of anticipation to Nigeria's campaign as they aim for success in one of Africa's premier football competitions.
