Mine Blasts Kill Six Including Four Policemen In Azerbaijan

POSTED ON November 8, 2023 •   World      BY Segun Adewole
Azerbaijan reported on Tuesday that a series of mine blasts had resulted in the loss of six lives, including four police officers and two civilians in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. The incident has further escalated tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia, with Azerbaijani authorities pointing fingers at "sabotage groups" from Armenia. The first explosion occurred in the early hours of the morning, claiming the lives of two civilians in the Khodzhavenskiy district of Nagorno-Karabakh. Authorities swiftly launched an investigation into the incident, seeking to determine the origin and cause of the explosion that abruptly ended the lives of these individuals. As the day progressed, a devastating second explosion occurred when a group of four police officers was en route to the site of the initial blast. Tragically, their vehicle struck a concealed mine, resulting in the loss of all four officers' lives. Azerbaijani security services, in a statement, attributed this horrifying incident to "a mine laid on a tunnel road under construction by illegal Armenian armed groups." Azerbaijan's leadership has not minced words, openly accusing Armenian "sabotage groups" of being responsible for these lethal explosions. The incident has not only claimed precious lives but has also reignited concerns over the fragile ceasefire agreement that was brokered last year, ending a bitter conflict that lasted for six weeks. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, urging both sides to exercise restraint and cooperate in the ongoing investigations. As the region grapples with this renewed tragedy, there is a palpable fear that this latest development could potentially reignite hostilities between Azerbaijan and Armenia, undoing the progress made towards lasting peace in Nagorno-Karabakh.
