The social media giant Meta, in partnership with Data Science Africa, has introduced the Llama Impact Grant, a new initiative designed to assist startups and researchers in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).
This grant aims to finance innovative projects that utilize Llama, Meta’s open-source large language model, to create solutions that address the unique challenges faced by the region.
Meta emphasized that Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds greater potential than any other contemporary technology to enhance human productivity and creativity, boost economic growth, and advance medical and scientific research.
“To help realize this potential, we are inviting proposals from individuals and organizations across Sub-Saharan Africa that leverage Meta’s open-source large language model, Llama, for projects that are economically and socially impactful, emphasizing areas like health, science, and agriculture. The selected proposal will be awarded a $20,000 grant to assist in developing these ideas and bringing them to market,” the statement read.
To tap into this potential, Meta is inviting proposals from individuals and organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa to create AI-driven solutions using Llama.
According to the announcement, proposals from startups and researchers will be evaluated based on several criteria: a clear and compelling use case for Llama; a well-established pathway to impact with a significant potential user base; the team’s expertise and composition; ethical considerations in product development; and a feasible budget and timeline.
