Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Meta AI has reached “almost” 500 million monthly active users, positioning it as one of the most widely used AI assistants globally.

Zuckerberg emphasised the potential for further growth during Meta Connect 2024 on Wednesday, noting that Meta AI had yet to launch in several major markets, including the European Union.

“We’re nearly at 500 million monthly users, and we haven’t even launched in some of the bigger countries yet,” he said, underscoring the assistant’s expanding reach.

Previously, Meta reported over 400 million monthly users, with Chief Financial Officer Susan Li noting that India is currently Meta AI’s largest market, largely due to the popularity of WhatsApp, which boasts over 500 million users in the country.

In contrast, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has more than 200 million weekly users.

Meta also introduced a new family of models named Llama 3.2, featuring enhanced multimodal capabilities.

The company is launching lightweight models Llama 3.2 1B and 3B that have not been trained on European user data, specifically for the European market.

In addition, Zuckerberg unveiled new features for Meta AI, including celebrity voices and lip-synced translations.

The generative AI-powered “imagine” feature is being extended across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, allowing users to create images based on prompts.

Furthermore, Meta AI will now be able to understand user-uploaded photos, provide information about them, and even edit images.

These announcements highlight Meta’s commitment to advancing AI technology and enhancing user interaction across its platforms.
