Legendary Argentinian footballer Lionel Messi opened up about retirement on the Big Time Podcast, revealing a mindset centred on enjoyment rather than a specific age.
Since his move to Inter Miami in 2023, the 36-year-old has continued his impressive form with 16 goals and 7 assists in 19 games.
However, injuries have raised questions about his long-term future in the sport.
Messi, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, highlighted self-awareness as a key factor in his retirement decision.
He stressed that his playing days are numbered when his performances no longer meet his own high standards, regardless of his age.
"I'm my own biggest critic," Messi said. "I know when I'm playing well and when I'm not. When I feel it's time to walk away, I will, age won't be a factor. It's about when I can't perform or enjoy myself on the pitch anymore when I can't contribute to the team."
