The 2023 presidential candidate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has declared that a merger among opposition parties aimed at defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027 is "sealed."
The special assistant on media to the former vice president, Abdulrasheed Shehu, shared this news through his verified Twitter account on Friday night.
Shehu mentioned that an alliance among key opposition figures is "just about time."
This announcement follows Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, criticizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding the nation's condition. Obi raised alarms about alleged institutional corruption, mismanagement, poverty, hardship, and a growing debt profile.
While he acknowledged that no merger deal exists at the moment, the former governor of Anambra State urged all Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation, to come together and confront the ruling APC.
The suggested merger has also been surrounded by controversy.
Before presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 election, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Presidential candidate of the labour Party Peter Obi denied any rumors of an agreement with Atiku.
Kwankwaso claimed that Atiku's camp misled some northern religious and political leaders about a supposed agreement involving him and Obi to alternate the presidency starting in 2027.
