The Labour Party has denied allegations from the Presidency that its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his followers are linked to the planned nationwide anti-government protest set for August 1.
The Presidency has labeled the calls for the nationwide protests with the hashtags #TinubuMustGo and #Revolution2024 as treasonous.
In a series of tweets posted on Saturday, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, accused Peter Obi and his supporters of promoting the hashtags, claiming that "They are not supporters of democracy but rather troublemakers".
"Their hashtags carry serious implications of treason. Seeking to overthrow an elected government is a grave act of treason. Calling for a revolution is essentially a call for a coup d’etat, which is also an act of treason," stated the Presidential aide.
However, Onanuga proposed a Save-Nigeria-Rally from August 1-15, 2024, in response to the planned nationwide protests from August 1-10 against the increasing cost of living and economic difficulties.
He alleged that the organizers of the protests were also involved in the #EndSARS protests of October 2020, which later turned violent.
"The individuals planning the protests are the same individuals who were influenced by IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, to initiate the destructive EndSARS protest in Nigeria in October 2020.
EndSARS initially began as a genuine protest by young people against the Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad, known for its heavy-handed tactics.
"IPOB members aiming to separate the South East region from Nigeria infiltrated the protest and took control of it for their own purposes.
Lagos still bears the scars of the destructive actions by IPOB elements to this day.
Two years after EndSARS, the IPOB, and other unsuspecting individuals joined the Labour Party in 2022 to support Peter Obi, who sympathizes with their cause.
They are the ones spreading the hashtags #EndBadGovernance, #TinubuMustGo, and #Revo."
